Israel makes history as the first UN member state to formally recognize Somaliland

History was made on 26 December 2025. The State of Israel formally recognized the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign and independent nation, following a high-level virtual meeting between H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a moment that reshapes Somaliland’s destiny, Israel and Somaliland signed a joint and mutual declaration, opening a new chapter of full diplomatic relations inspired by the spirit of the Abraham Accords.

Prime Minister Netanyahu extended a formal invitation to President Irro for an official visit to Israel, signaling the deepening of strategic and diplomatic ties.

This historic recognition affirms Somaliland’s enduring statehood, validates its decades-long, peaceful quest for lawful international recognition, and marks its irreversible emergence onto the global stage as a legitimate, responsible, and peace-anchoring member of the international community.

Announcing the decision, Prime Minister Netanyahu praised President Irro’s leadership and commitment to stability and peace, while President Irro expressed gratitude for Israel’s recognition and its role in advancing regional security and counter-terrorism efforts.

Israel also announced plans to immediately expand cooperation with Somaliland across key sectors including agriculture, health, technology, and the economy, laying the foundation for shared prosperity and long-term partnership.

For Somaliland, this is more than recognition — it is history, dignity, and a future affirmed.

The AU rejected Somaliland’s recognition by Israel because it remains part of Somalia and the AU upholds the “intangibility of colonial-era borders” to protect African stability.

Recognizing Somaliland could set a dangerous precedent for other secessionist movements. The AU supports Somalia’s government and opposes unilateral changes to its territory.
