Iten’s iconic World Athletics Heritage Plaque faces vandalism

Iten, the world-renowned “Home of Champions” in Elgeyo Marakwet County, continues to shine on the global athletics stage after being honoured in 2019 with the prestigious World Athletics Heritage Plaque.

The recognition, celebrated worldwide, acknowledged the town’s extraordinary contribution to long-distance running and placed Iten among iconic athletic destinations across the globe.

The plaque was installed at the famous Iten View Point, a symbolic location overlooking the Rift Valley escarpment and a popular stop for athletes, tourists, and locals.

The site was chosen to reflect the town’s pride and visibility as a global training hub.

However, the pride behind this honour is now dimmed by growing concerns after the plaque suffered significant wear and breakage due to harsh weather conditions.

With parts of the marker already deteriorating, residents fear that vandalism could soon worsen the situation, threatening the survival of this historic symbol.

Stakeholders worry that without urgent intervention, Iten risks losing a globally recognized emblem of its athletic legacy.

The plaque was meant to serve as a lasting reminder of the champions who train on the town’s iconic red-dirt roads, yet its current state raises questions about protection and maintenance.

Coaches, athletes, and community leaders are calling for restoration or protective measures, including possibly relocating the plaque or shielding it from environmental damage.

They argue that safeguarding the monument is essential for preserving both Iten’s heritage and its international reputation.

As Iten remains a magnet for world-class runners and sports enthusiasts, the damaged and vulnerable plaque stands as a reminder that history must be preserved with intention—just as champions build their legacy with dedication and resilience.
