Following the mysterious death of Albert Ojwang, Nominated MP Sabina Chege has launched a scathing attack against the National Police Service (NPS) and the manner they are handling the case casually.
According to Sabina, the NPS statements explaining how the Homa Bay blogger died in police custody are dissatisfying, insisting that the Central Police Station and officers in duty must be held accountable.
Speaking on TV47’s Morning CafĂ© show on Tuesday, June 10, the lawmaker demanded the police to provide Kenyans with the whole account of why Ojwang’ was arrested in the first place, why he was ferried all the way from Homa Bay to Nairobi, 400 kilometres away.
“Reports say that Central Police Station OCS refused to book Albert Ojwang’, because he was bleeding when he was brought. So how did Ojwang’ end up in a police cell?” Asked Sabina Chege.
Education levels of police officers a factor?
Sabina also proposed drastic changes to be made in NPS’s recruitment requirement, with much emphasies put on the education levels of recruits.
“When recruiting our police officers, we don’t look for top performers education-wise. Maybe it is time we relook at this, because these are people we entrust our lives with. It is a sad day for Kenyans. Heads must roll,” she noted.
The MP also questioned the independence of IPOA after its chairperson, Isaack Hassan, conducted a press conference with NPS officials who are accused of the death of Ojwang’, instead of investigating and holding police officers culpable accountable.
On the issue of investigating the incident, Sabina has urged politicians to stop treating Kenyans based on their selfish PR gimmicks, assuring that President William Ruto will look into the matter accordingly and use his powers to punish the villain.
“As politicians, we should stop treating Kenyans’ PR lies. We use innocent Kenyans to advance our agenda, we want to be seen running to courts to defend them. But after the cameras are off, we abandon the said Kenyans, We will never have an angel as a president. Yes, the buck stops with President William Ruto in the case of Albert Ojwang. Investigations must be fastened, and action taken against the culprits.”
