Jalang’o declares interest in Nairobi Senatorial seat in 2027

Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Oduor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has declared his intention to contest for the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Elections, setting the stage for a potential political contest with current Senator Edwin Sifuna, who also serves as the ODM secretary general.

Speaking during an interview on Radio 47’s breakfast show hosted by Emmanuel Mwashumbe and Alex Mwakideu, Jalang’o said his decision to seek the seat is personal and driven by his political experience and engagement with Nairobi residents.

“Mimi huamua na naendea. Mimi nakuambia naweza kuwa gavana wa Nairobi, na naweza kuwa seneta wa Nairobi, na naweza kuwa mbunge wa Lang’ata, na naweza kuwa mbunge wa pahali popote hapa Nairobi. Maana nimetembea, nimesikia, nimeongelesha… why not? Nitaendea!” he declared.

The first-term MP emphasized that his political ambitions are not influenced by external forces, including the presidency.

“Sijatumwa na Rais Ruto kuwania useneta Nairobi, ni uamuzi wangu. Siasa haipangiwi na yeyote, kiti unachokitaka haungoji kuambiwa,” he said.

Jalango reaffirmed his loyalty to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), noting that he would seek the party’s ticket if he officially joins the race.

“Mimi ni mwanachama wa ODM. Nikisimama nitasimama na chama hicho,” he stated.

At the same time, he expressed support for coalition politics ahead of the 2027 General Elections, suggesting that alliances will play a key role in shaping the country’s leadership.

Kuna coalitions mingi ambazo zinakuja, ile coalition ambayo itakuwa na ODM hapo ndio ntakuwa,” he added.

The legislator also voiced support for ODM remaining within the broad-based government arrangement. “Ni ngumu sanaa chama kimoja kuchukua serikali,” Jalango said.

If he runs, Jalango could face Senator Edwin Sifuna in what may become one of Nairobi’s most closely watched political contests.
