Over the past few weeks ,a new phrase has taken over Kenyan social media, Tuko Kadi. But beyond the trend, it represents a powerful shift in how young people are engaging with politics.
The Tuko kadi movement is a Gen Z led voter mobilisation campaign encouraging young Kenyans to register as voters, collect their voter cards and participate in the 2027 General Election.
What started as a viral online trend has quickly translated into real-world action. Across the country, thousands of young people are turning up at registration centres with long queues reported in major towns including Nairobi and beyond.
The movement has also gained national attention from the media, politicians and civil society.
However, like any powerful movement, it is not drama free; some leaders, politicians are trying to associate themselves with the youth-driven campaign.
At the same time, organisers have maintained that Tuko Kadi is independent and people-led, emphasising that it is not aligned to any political party.
This movement could seriously shift Kenya’s future because historically the youth voter turnout has been low.
If mobilized, Gen Z could decide elections, since Tuko kadi is not just a hype its a digital generation turning influence into real-world power.
If it stays independent and consistent it could become one of the most impactful youth-led political awakenings Kenya has seen in years.
