Journalists attacked for covering chaos witnessed at Gachagua’s DCP party headquarters

Journalists covering the unveiling of the Democracy for the Citizens Party, founded by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, faced violent intimidation and physical attacks by bodyguards affiliated with the party.

The incident occurred after alleged “goons” attempted to access the party headquarters, sparking chaos that led to the use of tear gas to disperse the milling crowd.

Kass TV’s Brian Tuva was beaten and had his camera confiscated while trying to document the unfolding events.

Other journalists attempting to record the disturbances on their phones were threatened with violence and coerced to delete their footage, raising serious concerns about press freedom and the safety of media personnel during politically sensitive events.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks on journalists in Kenya, particularly during political rallies, protests, and demonstrations.

Media practitioners regularly face harassment, physical assault, and intimidation from various actors including police, political supporters, and other hostile groups.

Such incidents not only endanger journalists but also undermine the public’s right to information and the media’s role in holding power to account.

Recent reports highlight a surge in violence against journalists covering anti-government protests and political events.

According to the Media Council of Kenya and the Kenya Union of Journalists, dozens of media professionals have been assaulted, had their equipment damaged or confiscated, and faced arbitrary arrests in the past year alone.

International bodies like the Federation of African Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists have condemned these attacks and called for accountability.

Despite repeated calls for investigations and stronger protections, impunity remains a significant challenge, with few perpetrators brought to justice.

Media organizations continue to urge the government and security agencies to uphold constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and ensure the safety of journalists operating in volatile environments.

The recent attack on journalists during the Democracy for the Citizens Party event underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to safeguard press freedom in Kenya, especially as the country approaches heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
