JSC appoints 100 new resident Magistrates to boost access to justice nationwide

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed 100 new Resident Magistrates as part of its ongoing effort to strengthen the administration of justice across the country.

In a statement, the Commission said the appointments align with its constitutional mandate to promote a Judiciary that is independent, accountable, effective and efficient.

The new officers join an existing pool of 560 magistrates serving in 143 Magistrates’ Courts nationwide.

Magistrates’ Courts handle the bulk of Kenya’s criminal and civil matters, making them the primary point of contact for most citizens seeking justice.

The JSC noted that the additional officers are expected to significantly ease case backlogs and speed up the resolution of disputes.

By increasing personnel in courts that manage the highest volume of filings, the Judiciary aims to confront longstanding delays that have undermined timely justice delivery.

The new magistrates will be deployed to various stations, including underserved regions and newly established courts, improving the geographical reach of judicial services.

The JSC also highlighted that the expanded workforce will enhance specialization within the Judiciary.

With more Resident Magistrates available, the Judiciary can assign officers to priority areas such as Children’s Courts and Small Claims Courts, while allowing senior judicial officers in major stations to concentrate on more complex matters.

Officials say these improvements greater efficiency, wider access and deeper specialization will contribute to strengthening public confidence in the justice system.

Faster case disposal and reduced delays are seen as key steps toward restoring trust in judicial processes.

The appointments form part of the Commission’s broader human resource strategy to ensure the Judiciary is well-equipped to deliver on its constitutional mandate and better serve the people of Kenya.
