Judiciary pushes for seamless digital justice, tackling interoperability challenge

The Kenyan Judiciary is making significant strides in its digital transformation journey, with a strong focus on creating a unified, end-to-end justice system.

A key priority highlighted by Chief Justice Martha Koome is overcoming the challenge of system interoperability, a complex issue that has historically created digital silos between government agencies.

According to a recent statement, the Judiciary has already achieved a crucial milestone by successfully integrating its case management system with that of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

This integration allows for a more fluid and efficient exchange of information, streamlining processes and reducing administrative bottlenecks.

The effort is part of a broader, rights-based approach to technology adoption championed by the Chief Justice.

The work is being coordinated through the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ), which is actively working to bring other vital institutions into the digital fold.

Plans are underway to integrate the systems of the police, prisons, probation, and the children’s department.

This ambitious project is aimed at creating a cohesive digital ecosystem where information flows seamlessly, from the moment of an arrest to the final resolution of a case.

This initiative is a critical component of the Judiciary’s wider vision, which also includes the development of an Artificial Intelligence Adoption Policy Framework.

This framework is designed to guide the ethical and purposeful use of AI tools in judicial operations.

While embracing these advancements, the Judiciary remains mindful of the need to address the “digital divide,” establishing ICT help desks at court stations to ensure no citizen is left behind in the transition to a modern, technologically empowered justice system.
