Kajiado West MP arrested over alleged forgery of his KCSE certificate

Kajiado West Member of Parliament George Sunkuyia has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate, in a scandal that continues to shake the political class.

The arrest occurred on the morning of Tuesday, May 27, 2025 as part of the EACC’s intensified probe into the authenticity of academic documents held by public officials.

In a brief statement, EACC confirmed the arrest, noting that, “The suspect is currently undergoing processing and will be arraigned in court to face charges related to the alleged forgery.”

Sunkuyia, a two-term MP under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022. His political journey dates back to his days as a councilor for the County Council (2002–2013) and later as an MCA for Keekonyokie ward (2013–2017).

The arrest adds to a growing list of high-profile forgery cases involving elected leaders. In February, Juja MP George Ndung’u Koimburi was arraigned in a Kiambu Court to face six charges of forging and presenting false academic documents, including a KCSE certificate and two degrees from JKUAT. He denied the charges and was released on a Ksh 200,000 cash bail.

Conversely, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, who had faced similar allegations, was acquitted in June 2024 after the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove its case and faulted irregular investigative procedures.

Observers say the cases underscore a deepening crisis of credibility among public servants. “Forgery of academic credentials is not just a legal issue; it erodes public trust and undermines the meritocracy essential in our democracy,” said Dr. Agnes Mumo, a governance analyst.

The EACC has pledged to continue its crackdown, having arraigned five other public officials earlier this year for similar offenses. The commission has emphasized that no individual—regardless of rank—is above scrutiny when it comes to integrity.
