Kakamega Homeboyz player Silas Abungana was allegedly killed by his younger brother following a domestic dispute at their family home in Shinyalu, Kakamega County.
The family has confirmed that Abungana died after sustaining serious head injuries inflicted by his 21-year-old brother, Denmark Muchiti, during a heated confrontation on Tuesday night.
Speaking to the media after recording statements at Shinyalu Police Station, Silas’ father, Chiroi Abungana, and his mother, Beatrice Khasiasa, said the quarrel started when Silas’ new wife went to borrow firewood from the kitchen.
Muchiti reportedly questioned why she needed firewood yet the household uses gas.
The woman is said to have reported the incident to Silas, who then confronted his brother, triggering a violent altercation in which Muchiti allegedly struck the footballer on the head with a blunt object.
Beatrice alleged that Silas’ new wife, who has been in the home for barely one month, is not friendly or helpful to her as a mother-in-law.
She added that the family recognizes Silas’ other wife with whom he has two children, but does not recognize the new woman as a wife, describing her as a girlfriend.
Silas succumbed to his injuries at around 1:00 a.m. while receiving treatment at Kakamega County Referral Hospital.
Shinyalu OCPD Daniel Mukumbu confirmed that the suspect fled the scene and police have launched a manhunt.
He added that family members, including the deceased’s parents, have been summoned to record statements.
The body has been moved to Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.
