The highly anticipated National Secondary School Games are set to ignite in Kakamega , with the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) President, Kipchumba Maiyo, expressing strong satisfaction with the preparations.
Speaking from the iconic Bukhungu Stadium, Maiyo called upon local fans to turn out in droves, promising a week of thrilling and highly competitive matches.
Maiyo highlighted the remarkable improvement in the quality of competition over the years, noting the heightened performance and determination displayed by participating schools.
Beyond the pursuit of trophies, the KSSSA President emphasized the games’ crucial role as a platform for identifying and nurturing raw talent, ultimately aiming to provide a brighter future for the youth through sports.
“It is not just about competition; we want to identify talent that can be nurtured by various federations so that the youth can have a better future through sports,” Maiyo reiterated.
He pointed to the inspiring journey of Aldrine Kibet as a testament to this vision. Kibet, who rose to prominence during the 2023 National Secondary School Sports competitions right here at Bukhungu Stadium, led St. Anthony Boys High School to the national title and was crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
His exceptional talent earned him a scholarship through the Government’s innovative Talanta Hela Programme to join Nastic Sports Academy in Spain.
This exposure proved pivotal, culminating in Kibet’s recent signing of a four-year contract with Spanish La Liga club Celta Vigo on July 16, 2025.
Kibet has also already represented the Kenya Under-20 national team as a midfielder, underscoring the potential unearthed by these very games.
Maiyo, along with a team of KSSSA officials, has been on an inspection tour of various venues in Kakamega, ensuring all is set for the competitions to kick off.
Bukhungu Stadium is earmarked to host the finals of the East Africa Secondary School Games football matches.
Teams are also expected to utilize the stadium’s artificial turf for training camps, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the playing surface before the main matches commence.
Looking beyond the national spectacle, Maiyo confirmed that following the conclusion of the National Games on August 2nd, Kakamega will serve as a two-week camp for Kenyan teams preparing for the East Africa Secondary School Games, which are scheduled to begin on August 14th.
The stage is truly set for a celebration of youth sports and the unveiling of Kenya’s next generation of athletic stars.
