The government has launched a Ksh. 70 million sports academy has been launched in Mbiuni, Mwala Constituency, as part of a larger Kenyan government initiative to develop sports talent across the country.
The project is a significant investment in identifying and developing talent among the local youth.
The facility is being undertaken under the auspices of the Kenya Academy of Sports. It will feature a comprehensive sports infrastructure, including a football pitch, volleyball court, ablution facilities, a borehole, and spectator stands.
According to the contractor, Muhamed Maow, the project is expected to take nine months to complete and will create approximately 200 jobs for youths, including both skilled and unskilled labor.
During the launch, Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka highlighted the facility’s potential to promote sports as a viable career path.
He noted that early talent development is crucial for elevating sports to both national and international prominence and that such academies will, in the long run, generate economic returns.
The Mwala academy is one of 37 pilot Constituency Sports Academies funded by a Ksh. 1.7 billion government allocation in December 2024, with a projected completion date of 2027.
Construction on these academies began in mid-April 2025. Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has already officiated groundbreaking ceremonies at several sites, including Magunga Primary School in Suba South Constituency, Homa Bay County, and Taru Secondary School in Kinango Constituency, Kwale County.
