The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has announced the death of three recruits following a medical emergency during a scheduled training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
In a statement issued on January 30, 2026, KDF said the incident occurred on January 29, 2026, during a routine endurance exercise.
According to the military, the recruits developed medical complications while participating in the training.
KDF said immediate medical assistance was provided on site by military medical personnel before the affected recruits were evacuated to Eldoret Regional Hospital for advanced care.
Despite what the military described as concerted efforts by the attending medical teams, the three recruits were pronounced dead.
“The Kenya Defence Forces is deeply saddened to announce the tragic loss of three recruits during a scheduled training activity,” the statement read.
The military confirmed that the next of kin have been formally notified and that it is providing the necessary support and assistance to the affected families.
KDF also conveyed its condolences to the families, loved ones, fellow recruits and colleagues of the deceased.
Following the incident, KDF said it has launched a thorough investigation in line with established military procedures to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The findings of the probe, the statement added, will guide any measures deemed necessary to improve safety and welfare for personnel undergoing training.
The Kenya Defence Forces reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, professionalism and care across all its operations and training programmes.
The incident adds to renewed scrutiny of safety measures during intense military training, as authorities await the outcome of the investigations to establish what led to the medical complications and whether changes to training protocols will be required.
