The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has assured Kenyans , that there is no release of contaminated sugar unfit for human consumption in the market.
KEBS posted on their X account claiming that there are statements circulating on public domain alleging that contaminated sugar is circulating in the Kenyan market.
They continued to insist that they would like dispel the allegations and ascertain that both locally produced and imported sugar undergo mandatory and rigorous inspection, testing and certification before released to the market.
”KEBS remains vigilant and transparent in its duty to protect consumers. ”We urge the public to disregard unverified and alarming information circulating in the social media and other platforms.”
KEBS was triggered by the statement of opposition leaders who claimed that over 25,000MT of sugar was not fit for consumption.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka claimed that the sugar landed in port of Mombasa is on its way to Western sugar factory to be repackaged and sold to unsuspecting Kenyans.
”We are aware of a cargo of 25,000MT of sugar that recently landed in our Port of Mombasa. These 25,000 MT of sugar are already on their way to a Western Kenya sugar factory to be repackaged and sold to unsuspecting Kenyans.”
