Kenya Cup: Kabras RFC finish top of regular season after edging Menengai Oilers

Kabras Sugar RFC confirmed their dominance in the 2025/26 Kenya Cup season after defeating Menengai Oilers 27–13 at the ASK Showground in Kakamega on Saturday March 14, 2026 to finish top of the regular season standings.

The victory ensured Kabras finished the regular season with 52 points from 11 matches, narrowly ahead of KCB Rugby on 50 points with the top two securing a direct home semi-final while Menengai Oilers settled for third place with 45 points to book a place in the playoffs.

In their match against Oilers, Kabras struck first through George Nyambua, who crossed the whitewash for the opening try before Erick Cantona added the conversion to hand the hosts an early 7–0 lead.

Menengai Oilers responded through Abdultwalib Wesonga’s penalty to cut the deficit, but Kabras maintained control of territory and possession, extending their advantage when Mathias Osimbo powered over for another try with Cantona again successful from the tee.

The visitors remained competitive and reduced the gap when Fortune Arturo scored a centre-post try to keep Oilers within reach as Kabras carried a 19–10 lead into halftime under heavy rain which had began in the closing stages of the first half.

The second half delayed to begin and once the weather eased, both teams returned for a brief warm-up before restarting play.

The Sugarmen resumed strongly after the break, captain Nyambua completing his brace from a well-organised rolling maul to stretch the lead further despite a missed conversion.

Wesonga added another penalty to keep Oilers in contention, but Kabras had the final say when Barry Robinson calmly slotted a late drop goal before the hooter sounded, sealing a deserved 27–13 victory.

The win extended Kabras Sugar’s unbeaten streak to 52 matches, including 51 victories, and marked head coach Carlos Katywa’s 50th unbeaten match since taking charge.

Elsewhere on Match Day 11, KCB Rugby secured second place on the standings with a dominant 57–17 victory over Daystar Falcons in Athi River, while Strathmore Leos confirmed their playoff spot after beating Kenya Harlequin 32–10 to finish fourth on 36 points.

Nakuru RFC defeated MMUST Rugby 25–19 as Impala RFC boosted their survival hopes with a narrow 17–13 win over Nondescripts to move to 10th place.

Kisumu RFC edged KU Blak Blad 9–8 in Kisumu but the win was not enough to save them from relegation after finishing 11th on 12 points, while bottom-placed MMUST remain at risk but still have a mathematical chance of survival pending the outcome of their rescheduled fixture.

Attention now turns to the Kenya Cup playoffs scheduled for April 18, followed by the semi-finals on April 25 and the final on May 2, where Kabras Sugar will seek to convert their dominant regular season form into another Kenya Cup title.
