Kenya Cup: KCB, Kabras renew rivalry in key fixture as season enters critical stage

The 2025/2026 Kenya Cup regular season heads into a decisive stretch this weekend with a series of fixtures that could shape the race for playoff positions, top-two finishes, and survival in the top tier.

At the centre of attention is the heavyweight showdown between Kabras Sugar RFC and KCB Rugby at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka, where the league’s top two sides will renew their rivalry for the 18th time.

Kabras arrive at the fixture sitting at the summit of the standings with 45 points after maintaining a flawless run this season.

The Kakamega-based side has won all nine of their matches while collecting bonus points in each outing.

Their remarkable consistency was further highlighted last weekend when they secured a 25–8 victory over Nondescripts, a result that extended their historic winning streak in the Kenya Cup to 50 matches, a run stretching back to 2022.

Close behind them are KCB Rugby on 43 points, also unbeaten in nine matches.

The bankers remain firmly in contention for the top spot and will be eager to close the gap when the two sides meet in what promises to be a defining encounter in the title race.

Recent meetings between the teams underline how evenly matched they have been.

Over their last ten clashes, each side has claimed five victories, sharing a perfectly balanced record.

Kabras’ biggest win during that period came in a commanding 29–5 triumph, while KCB’s most emphatic response was a 44–20 victory.

Beyond the headline clash in Nairobi, attention will also turn to Nakuru where Menengai Oilers host MMUST RFC at the ASK Showground.

The Oilers currently occupy third place on 40 points following their 25–15 defeat to KCB in the previous round a result that halted their momentum and tightened the race for automatic semi-final qualification.

Returning to home turf offers them a chance to regain form and strengthen their push for a top-two finish.

At the Ngong Racecourse, Nondescripts host Daystar Falcons in a fixture that could shape the middle of the standings. Nondies, currently ninth with 14 points from eight matches, will aim to improve their position and keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Meanwhile, KU Blak Blad take on Impala RFC at Kenyatta University in another important contest for both sides. Blak Blad currently hold fifth position with 23 points and are firmly in the playoff conversation.

Impala, on the other hand, sit tenth with 12 points and will be eager to climb the standings and distance themselves from the relegation battle.

At the RFUEA Grounds, Kenya Harlequin face Kisumu RFC in a matchup between two sides with different objectives. Quins occupy eighth place with 16 points and remain within striking distance of the playoff places.

The final fixture of the round sees Nakuru RFC host Strathmore Leos at Nakuru Athletics Club in what could be one of the most competitive matchups of the weekend.

Strathmore currently sit fourth with 26 points and are pushing to secure a playoff position, while Nakuru RFC in seventh place with 17 points remain within touching distance of the top six. A win for either side could significantly alter the shape of the playoff race.
