Kenya-DRC match to disrupt JKIA and Wilson airports access

Travelers using Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) or Wilson Airport on Sunday August 3, 2025 are warned to expect significant delays and allow much more time for their journeys.

Major road closures are in place for a key African Nations Championship (CHAN) football match in Nairobi between Kenya’s Harambee Stars vs Les Léopards of DRC.

According to an advisory by The Kenya Airports Authority the restrictions are necessary “to facilitate the smooth movement of teams, officials, and fans, and to enhance security around the match venue.” This has resulted in “several major roads in the city” being “fully closed or partially restricted.”

The advisory explicitly warns of major delays in accessing the City’s two major airports.

“Traffic disruptions are expected, affecting travel times to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport,” said KAA.

Key closures impacting airport access include the full closure of Aerodrome Road from Madaraka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout, partial closure (one side) of Lang’ata Road from Madaraka roundabout to Lusaka roundabout, and partial closure (one side) of Mombasa Road from Lusaka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout.

Recommended diversions include using Likoni-Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass from Mombasa Road to CBD; Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road from Lang’ata Road to CBD; and Limuru Road or Kiambu Road from CBD to Thika Road areas, or the Eastern Bypass from Thika Road.

The authority has directed passengers to plan meticulously and leave early to navigate the expected city-wide congestion.

“Passengers are strongly urged to check flight schedules and allow for prolonged travel times to ensure timely arrival at JKIA or Wilson Airport,” said KAA.
