Kenya launches experience AI programme to prepare learners for the future

Today, educators, policymakers, technology partners, and school leaders gathered in Nairobi for the official launch of the Experience AI Programme in Kenya, a global initiative developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in partnership with Google DeepMind and implemented locally by STEAMLabs Africa.

The programme is designed to equip teachers with the skills, tools, and confidence to introduce Artificial Intelligence concepts responsibly and effectively in classrooms, particularly for learners aged 11–14.

The launch event convened stakeholders from education, government, and industry to explore practical approaches to teaching AI literacy and ensuring students understand not only how to use AI tools, but how they work, their limitations, and their ethical implications.

Speaking during the launch, Felix Malombe, Executive Director of STEAMLabs Africa, emphasized the urgency of AI education:

“Artificial Intelligence is already shaping how young people learn and interact with information. This programme ensures Kenyan learners are not just consumers of technology, but informed, responsible creators and critical thinkers in an AI-driven world.”

The initiative aligns with Kenya’s digital transformation agenda and supports national efforts to prepare teachers and learners for emerging technologies.

Through training, resources, and partnerships, the programme will support schools across diverse contexts, including those with limited access to technology infrastructure.

The launch concluded with participating educators and school leaders publicly committing to advancing responsible AI education in their institutions, marking a significant step toward building a digitally skilled and ethically aware generation.
