The Kenya Lionesses have officially commenced preparations for the upcoming Rugby Africa Women’s Cup, scheduled from June 5 to 16 in Madagascar.
Trials held on May 12 at the RFUEA Grounds saw over 50 players vie for spots in the provisional squad, reflecting the team’s commitment to building a competitive side for the tournament.
The Rugby Africa Women’s Cup will follow a round-robin format, with all participating teams playing each other across three match days-June 7, 11, and 15-at Stade Makis Stadium in Antananarivo. Kenya’s campaign begins against hosts Madagascar on June 7 at 3:00 pm EAT.
They will then face defending champions South Africa on June 11, followed by a final group match against Uganda’s Lady Cranes on June 15, both kicking off at 1:00 pm EAT.
The Lionesses’ squad for the trials featured players from various clubs including Impala Roans, Mwamba RFC, Kenya Harlequins, Northern Suburbs, NYS Spades, Shamberere, Nakuru RFC, Rongo RFC, and an unattached player. This diverse pool underscores the depth of talent in Kenyan women’s rugby.
Kenya’s recent performances in regional competitions have been encouraging, with the Lionesses demonstrating resilience and skill despite stiff competition from powerhouses like South Africa and Madagascar.
