Kenya Met issues heavy rainfall advisory for multiple counties

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of intensified downpours across several parts of the country from February 21 to February 25, 2026.

In the notice released on Thursday, February 20, the department indicated that rainfall currently being experienced in parts of the country is expected to increase significantly.

“The rainfall being experienced over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and Highlands west and East of Rift Valley including Nairobi is expected to intensify to more than 20mm in 24hrs on 21st February 2026,” the advisory read.

According to the department, the rains are likely to become heavier between February 22 and 24.

“The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24hrs on 22nd, 23rd and 24th February 2026 and spread to the Southeastern lowlands and the Coastal region especially south Coast,” the statement added.

The intensity is, however, projected to reduce on February 25.

Counties expected to be affected include Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Kakamega, Embu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, southern Tana River and parts of Kilifi.

Residents in the listed areas have been urged to remain vigilant due to possible flooding.

“Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream,” the department cautioned. Members of the public were further advised to avoid “driving through or walking in moving water or open fields.”

The advisory, classified under moderate to heavy severity with a “moderate probability of occurrence (33% to 66% chance),” is expected to guide preparedness efforts among national and county disaster response agencies.
