After seven years of construction, the government has officially announced the completion of the 66-kilometre Ngong Suswa Highway, unveiling a long-awaited alternative route for travellers travelling from Nairobi to the Rift Valley and the Nyanza region.
The highway stretches across Kajiado North and Kajiado West sub-counties, opening up faster access for travellers heading to Narok, Bomet, Kisii, Kericho and other parts of western Kenya.
By providing a new outlet from Nairobi through Ngong, the road is expected to significantly reduce pressure on the heavily used Mai Mahiu escarpment route.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 3, the State Department for Roads described the highway as a key infrastructure milestone that will improve traffic flow and enhance safety for thousands of road users .
The government noted that congestion, frequent accidents and delays associated with the Mai Mahiu route are expected to ease as more motorists shift to the new highway.
Beyond easing travel, the Ngong Suswa Highway is projected to boost trade, tourism and economic activity along the Kajiado corridor by improving the movement of goods and opening up previously inaccessible areas.
Businesses are expected to benefit from shorter travel times and lower transport costs, while tourists will enjoy easier access to scenic destinations in the Rift Valley.
Residents and leaders in the region have welcomed the project, saying it will transform connectivity and unlock new development opportunities.
However, as traffic gradually builds up along the highway, road users have been urged to observe safety regulations as authorities continue with final inspections and supporting works.
