Kenya Prisons ball game teams aim for national leagues

The Kenya Prisons is looking into getting back into a number of national sports leagues in the country as it now embarks on an ambitious plan that will see most of its officers interested in sports, get involved in station level competitions and constant scouting.

Speaking after a closing ceremony for the prisons’ ball games at the Ulinzi stadium, prisons commissioner general Patrick Aranduh said there were elaborate plans to revive sports within the service and provide a better work – life balance for officers, as one of the ways of fighting an emerging trend of mental health.

According to the prisons’ top bosses, every station will now set aside time for sports where good talent will be scouted, ready for contest at the regional level, before better teams are now put in place to form serious teams to compete at the national level.

The commissioner general avers that the service has been doing extremely well in netball and volleyball, but it would now be better in reintroducing the other sports including martial arts.

In the two – day tournament, 10 regions competed in football, netball and volleyball.

In football, the grand showdown was between Prisons Headquarters Region and Eastern Region where it lived up to the hype – tactical, intense, and fiercely contested.

Neither side could find the breakthrough in regulation time, with the match ending in a tense 0-0 stalemate.

The ultimate decider – penalties.

In a heart-stopping shootout, Eastern Region held their nerve, edging out PHQ 7-6 to clinch the title and be crowned overall champions!
