Kenya reaffirms support for Somalia, halts the planned opening of Somaliland Liaison office in Nairobi

The government of Kenya has clarified its position regarding the planned opening of a Somaliland Liaison Office in Nairobi, emphasising its unwavering recognition of the Federal Republic of Somalia as a sovereign state.

In an official communication addressed to the Somaliland Liaison Office, the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs expressed concern over notifications circulating about the opening of the Somaliland Liaison Office, which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in Nairobi.

The Ministry reiterated that the Government of Kenya “maintains and respectfully reaffirms its unwavering recognition of the Federal Republic of Somalia as a sovereign State.” Kenya values its relations with Somaliland and other regional governments, particularly in efforts to enhance peace, security, trade, and investment across the Horn of Africa.

However, it underscored that all such engagements are conducted within the framework of Kenya’s strong diplomatic ties with Somalia.

The statement further noted that the event planned for May 27 had not received approval from the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. As such, the Ministry declared that the proposed Liaison Office “does not enjoy the imprimatur of the Republic of Kenya and cannot be allowed to proceed.”

Kenya reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s ongoing state-building and development agenda, pledging continued cooperation through sustained dialogue with the Federal Government of Somalia. The Ministry concluded by renewing its assurances of “highest consideration” to the Somaliland Liaison Office in Nairobi, while making clear that any diplomatic office must comply with Kenya’s official foreign policy and approval processes.

This development comes amid heightened diplomatic sensitivities in the region, as Kenya seeks to balance regional engagement with its commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty.
