Kenya Rugby Union seeks new manager for team Shujaa amidst World Rugby restructuring

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has initiated a crucial search for a new Kenya Sevens National Team Manager, a pivotal role as Shujaa navigates a demanding transition period. T

he vacancy, replacing Morgan Ngumbi, comes at a critical juncture for the national sevens side, with applications open until July 21st, 2025.

The successful candidate, a Kenyan citizen, must possess a post-secondary qualification, a minimum of three years’ relevant experience, and essential certifications including Rugby Ready, Safeguarding, and World Rugby Laws.

Key responsibilities will span comprehensive logistical coordination, meticulous administrative oversight, prudent budget management, and serving as the vital communication link between the team and the KRU.

Morgan Ngumbi’s tenure saw Shujaa demonstrate remarkable resilience, particularly in their return to the World Series.

However, the 2025/26 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series proved challenging. While the team showed flashes of brilliance, including a commendable seventh-place finish in Cape Town and an emphatic second-place finish in Singapore – losing narrowly to Fiji in the final – consistency remained elusive.

Early season outings in Dubai and Perth yielded 10th place finishes, and a tough Vancouver leg saw them finish last.

Despite these efforts and the highlight in Singapore, World Rugby’s recent restructuring means Shujaa will compete in HSBC Division 2 for the 2026 season.

This structural shift underscores the importance of the incoming Team Manager. They will be instrumental in providing stability and unwavering support to the squad as Shujaa prepares for this new chapter, aiming to build momentum and fight their way back to the top tier of global sevens rugby.

The KRU’s diligent recruitment reflects their commitment to strengthening the team’s off-field operations as much as their on-field performance.
