Kenya secures historic position on INTERPOL executive committee

Kenya has achieved a major international milestone with the appointment of Mohamed Amin, Director of Criminal Investigations, as one of Africa’s Delegates to the INTERPOL Executive Committee on November 27, 2025.

This was during the 93rd INTERPOL General Assembly held in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Assembly saw several key appointments, including Lucas Philippe of France as INTERPOL President for four years, and Wang Yong of China as Vice-President for Asia on a three-year term. Kazumi Ogasawara of Japan and Stefano Carvelli of Italy were chosen as Delegates for Asia and Europe respectively.

Africa will have dual representation through Kenya’s Mohamed I. Amin and Tunisia’s Issam Fetoui, both serving three-year terms.

The Kenyan delegation received diplomatic backing from Ambassador Jessica M. Gakinya, Billy Mathu from Kenya’s mission in Rabat, and Eva Nthoki, Head of Candidatures Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi, demonstrating Kenya’s dedication to international collaboration and multilateral security alliances.

This achievement reflects INTERPOL member nations’ confidence in Kenya’s dedication to strengthening regional and international security structures.

It aligns with Kenya’s aspiration for a secure and stable Africa that promotes innovation, strengthens partnerships, and enhances collaboration to address cybercrime, terrorism, illegal trade, financial crimes, and offenses against women and children.

Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, formally introduced Amin’s candidacy to INTERPOL membership, highlighting national solidarity and Kenya’s determination to play a prominent role in international law enforcement.

Amin thanked President Ruto for his nomination and the opportunity to represent both Kenya and Africa on this crucial global security platform, emphasizing that this recognition honors the entire nation.

In his acceptance speech, Amin expressed appreciation to member states, saying he was privileged to assume this role and that their support demonstrates Kenya’s dedication to international law enforcement and cross-regional collaboration.

“I am deeply honoured to take on this responsibility as Delegate for Africa to the INTERPOL Executive Committee. Your confidence in my candidacy reflects Kenya’s commitment to international policing and the importance of partnership across our regions,” Amin said.

He pledged to work toward an inclusive and contextually responsive INTERPOL while advocating for vulnerable populations, stating he would promote the resources, capabilities, and partnerships necessary to dismantle criminal organizations and protect those most at risk.

“I will continue to advocate for the tools, capacities, and cooperation needed to dismantle criminal networks and defend the rights and lives of those who depend on us the most,” Amin stated.

With over thirty years of distinguished law enforcement experience, Amin has consistently promoted operational effectiveness, transparency, and legal principles.

His career highlights include strengthening Kenya’s connection with INTERPOL’s policing systems and expanding collaborative ties with AFRIPOL, EAPCCO, and international security agencies, making him well-suited to champion African concerns internationally.

In his new continental role, Amin will focus on amplifying Africa’s perspectives and concerns within INTERPOL, promoting technology-enhanced policing methods, strengthening capacity development and collaborative operations, and increasing efforts to combat human trafficking and child exploitation.
