Kenya shocks hosts UAE with 58-50 win at UAE Netball Cup

The Kenya national netball team stunned hosts United Arab Emirates with a commanding 58-50 victory at the UAE Netball Cup in Dubai, delivering a statement performance against a more experienced and higher-ranked side.

This victory marks Kenya’s second consecutive win in the tournament and guarantees them a spot in Saturday’s bronze medal match. The team, nicknamed the “Kenyan Divas,” displayed remarkable discipline, tactical awareness, and mental strength throughout the match.

Kenya took early control of the game, edging the first quarter 13-12 in a tightly contested opening. Head coach Mugisha Ali made a game-changing move in the second quarter, substituting Lucy Akumu for Delilah Akinyi in the shooting circle.

Akumu, who had a modest shooting record of 3 goals from 6 attempts (50%), moved to goal keeper — a switch that paid off handsomely.

With Delilah Akinyi taking over as goal shooter, Kenya built momentum and opened up a 7-point lead by halftime, going into the break at 30-23. Akinyi was clinical under the post, finishing the match with an impressive 97% shooting accuracy, scoring 30 out of 31 attempts.

Despite the home crowd’s energy and tactical changes by UAE coach Deb Jones — including the introduction of Racheal Tuckey (wing defense) and Fiona Van Dem (goal defense) — the Falcons struggled to disrupt Kenya’s rhythm. Kenya closed the third quarter ahead at 46-37, maintaining a solid lead.

UAE mounted a spirited comeback in the final quarter, but Kenya’s defense stood tall. Dorine Akinyi added 25 goals from 28 attempts (89%), while defenders like Teresa Othuon ensured UAE’s attackers were kept under pressure.

“We defended so well, minimized mistakes, and marked our opponents tightly,” said Othuon. “We didn’t give them space — that’s why we emerged victorious.”Coach Mugisha Ali credited the team’s mental

preparation and growth:
“UAE are a very good team — they beat us in Singapore — but we were ready. We’ve worked hard to improve, especially on offense. This win is special.”

Kenya now sets its sights on the bronze medal showdown, with growing confidence and momentum on their side.
