Kenya urged to leverage radio for peace ahead of 2027 polls

As Kenyans joined the world in commemorating World Radio Day, journalists and media stakeholders called for responsible reporting, warning that radio remains one of the most powerful tools in shaping national cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in Mombasa during an organized by Coast Media FC that brought together journalists and students for a symbolic march from the iconic Mapembeni to Burhani Grounds, highlighting the impact of radio in society and encouraging youth to embrace journalism as a vehicle for truth, unity, and national development.

Speaking to the press, Mck coast region Coordinator Maureen Mudi emphasized the critical role of radio in shaping public opinion. “Radio is not just a source of news; it is a lifeline that can either unite or divide communities. As the 2027 elections approach, journalists must prioritize fact-based reporting, avoid sensationalism, and ensure their platforms promote dialogue and understanding,” she said.

The march drew hundreds of students and young media enthusiasts, who were briefed on ethical journalism practices and the power of responsible broadcasting.

Journalist Mark Mutuku noted, “Radio has an unmatched reach, especially in coastal communities. A single broadcast can inspire, inform, or, if misused, inflame tensions. We must ensure it serves as a bridge, not a weapon.”

Charles Mugenyi added, “Engaging students is key. They are the next generation of reporters and broadcasters. By teaching them the impact of ethical storytelling today, we are safeguarding peace for tomorrow.”

Media stakeholders stressed that Kenya’s past elections have shown the dangers of unchecked misinformation and inflammatory broadcasts. With political temperatures expected to rise, ethical journalism, especially on radio, will be central to maintaining harmony and preventing community-level conflicts. As the country prepares for the 2027 polls, the message from Coast media leaders is clear: let radio inform, educate, and unite, not divide.

The Mapembeni-to-Burhani march, organized by Coast Media FC, stands as a vivid reminder that journalism, when wielded responsibly, has the power to shape Kenya’s democratic future.
