Kenyan coast poised for economic boom as Mombasa prepares for East Africa Ocean Festival

The coastal region is poised for a tourism and economic boost as Mombasa prepares to host the East Africa Ocean Festival (TEAOF) 2025, expected to draw participants and visitors from across the world.

Set to run from October 9 to 11 at Tudor Water Sports and Fort Jesus, the festival will feature dragon boat competitions, dhow races, Swahili cultural showcases, camel races, and a variety of water sports.

Participants include representatives from the Kenya Navy, Coast Guard, Technical University of Mombasa, and various local beach clubs and tourism bodies.

TEAOF co-founder Stephanie Maseki said the event has created new job opportunities for youth in photography and hospitality, while stimulating the local economy and raising awareness about prospects in the blue economy sector.

“One of the major highlights will be ocean-based sports, from canoeing to jet-ski and dhow races, showcasing the seafaring traditions and talent of both local and international participants,” Maseki said.

Tudor sports Seif Fatwa in charge of Ocean sports has called on Mombasa residents to turn up in large numbers to witness different cultures, sports, deep sea fishing and also get entertained by different artists.

Speaking at the Tudor creek on Tuesday the official noted that the festival will help position Mombasa as one of the top tourist destinations in East Africa, giving the county a global spotlight.

Dragon boat racing takes place on a flatwater course where competitors start together and race forward toward the finish line. There are two types of boats: 10-seater and 20-seater, which refers to the number of paddlers in the boat. Paddlers sit in twos side-by-side, and each athlete has a single-bladed paddle.

Mombasa county CECM Mohamed Osman emphasized the need for responsible tourism and environmental stewardship, urging locals to contribute to the cleanup efforts and ensure proper plastic use during the event.

“We want to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our coastal environment, and we encourage residents to get involved by participating in the beach cleanups and mangrove restoration efforts,” he said.
