Kenyan duo storms FISU games mixed doubles final, eyes Gold

Kenyan tennis sensations Angella Okutoyi and Kael Shah are on the cusp of a historic gold medal at the ongoing FISU World University Games 2025 in Germany.

The formidable duo powered their way into the Mixed Doubles final after a commanding performance in Thursday’s semi-final clash.

Okutoyi and Shah showcased their prowess by securing a straight-set victory (7-6, 6-3) over the formidable Portuguese pair of Garcia De Liborio and Pedro Araujo, who were the tournament’s fourth seeds.

This decisive win has set up an exciting final showdown against Japan’s Natsuki Yoshimoto and Dylan Friend. The Japanese duo pulled off a major upset, eliminating the top-seeded Czech pair of Karolina Kubanova and Jan Jermar with a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 victory to book their place in the final.

The Mixed Doubles final is scheduled for Friday at 11 am EAT, with Kenyans eagerly anticipating a golden moment.

For both Shah and Okutoyi, this final presents a prime opportunity for redemption and a triumphant end to their tournament. Shah experienced a first-round exit in the Men’s Singles, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Italy’s Fabio De Michele.

Okutoyi, seeded ninth in the Women’s Singles, saw her journey conclude in the Round of 16 after a 6-3, 6-4 loss to India’s Adkar Vaishnavi. Now, united on the doubles court, they have a chance to crown their FISU Games campaign with a coveted gold medal.
