Kenya has achieved a landmark moment in its rugby history with the appointment of three distinguished officials Edwin Teya, John Ojara, and James Absaloms to the prestigious World Rugby Citing Commissioner’s Panel.
This milestone not only elevates the profile of Kenyan rugby on the global stage but also opens doors for the trio to officiate as citing commissioners in elite men’s and women’s international test matches worldwide.
For Edwin Teya and John Ojara, the appointments are a testament to years of unwavering dedication and excellence, both in local competitions and on the international circuit.
Their elevation, alongside James Absaloms, signals a strong vote of confidence from World Rugby in the professionalism and quality of Kenya’s rugby officials.
John Ojara, who will make his debut as a citing commissioner in a top-tier women’s international match this July, expressed his excitement and gratitude. “I am incredibly honored and excited to announce my appointment by World Rugby as a Citing Commissioner for an upcoming top-tier women’s international rugby match in July 2025,” Ojara said.
This assignment marks his first top-level international duty since earning his World Rugby accreditation in 2022.
Ojara reflected on his journey, noting that while he has officiated numerous local 15s and 7s matches and some lower-tier internationals, this new role represents a significant step up.
He attributed the achievement to the Kenya Rugby Union’s sustained investment in training and capacity building, which has benefited not only players and coaches but also match officials.
“This is a major milestone in my officiating journey. The Union’s commitment to developing all aspects of the game is truly paying off, and I am proud to represent Kenya at this level,” Ojara added.
