Kenyan space enthuastiats to get a rare chance to speak live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS)

Kenya has been chosen to host the next round of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) programme, a global initiative that allows participants to communicate live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

The selection places Kenya as the only African country picked for the 2026 ARISS cycle, highlighting the country’s growing profile in space science, innovation and STEM education across the continent.

The hosting window is scheduled between July and December 2026, during which Kenyan students, professionals and members of the public will have a rare opportunity to engage astronauts through live radio contact.

Organisers say the programme is expected to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), while also encouraging innovation within Kenya’s emerging space and technology sectors.

Preparations are already underway, with organisers set to work closely with an assigned Pan-African Citizen Science e-Laboratory mentor alongside Agency Liaison Harold Safary to ensure the radio contact sessions meet ARISS technical and educational standards.

The ARISS programme is designed to inspire young people by offering direct interaction with space missions, making space science more accessible and relatable.

For Kenya, the opportunity represents a significant step forward in space education and public engagement, bringing global space exploration closer to classrooms and communities.

Organisers have indicated that an open call will be announced for individuals interested in speaking directly with astronauts aboard the ISS during the contact window.

The milestone is being viewed as a boost for Kenya’s ambitions in science and innovation, while positioning the country as a key player in Africa’s growing participation in global space initiatives.
