The sports fraternity in Kenya has been thrown into a somber mood following the passing of former Prime Minister and fervent sports lover, Raila Odinga, at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment in India.
Raila Odinga was well-known for his deep engagement with Kenyan sports, leaving a significant void in the community.
The Gor Mahia patron
Odinga was the esteemed patron of Gor Mahia, arguably Kenya’s most successful football club. The club offered a heartfelt eulogy, honoring him as a “guiding light” to the club he supported and loved the most.
Support across Kenyan sports
Beyond his role at Gor Mahia, Odinga was a dedicated supporter of the national team, the Harambee Stars, with his most recent public appearance being at the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani.
The Rugby fraternity also joined the nation in mourning, noting that Raila also loved attending Rugby matches at the RFUEA Grounds.
The rugby community extended their deepest condolences and committed to honoring his legacy of leadership and nation-building, values that guide the sport both on and off the field.
