Kenya’s race for clean sport: Gov’t commits funds, overhauls anti-doping body

In a decisive move to protect Kenya’s global legacy as a powerhouse of clean athletics, the Government has unveiled a comprehensive reform agenda to fortify its anti-doping framework.

Speaking at Nyayo National Stadium, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, confirmed the government is moving swiftly to resolve outstanding World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) compliance issues.

The CS announced that the National Treasury has committed to ring-fencing funding for anti-doping programmes, ensuring the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) has the sustainable resources needed to execute its mandate.

This critical financial commitment will begin with an allocation of additional funding for ADAK in the current financial year’s supplementary budget.

Furthermore, the government is immediately restructuring ADAK, reviewing its organogram to bring on board the right technical experts and strengthening the board in line with international standards.

CS Mvurya assured the public that Kenya has already addressed 30 out of the 35 compliance issues raised by WADA and has submitted a progressive action plan for the remaining five.

The bold reforms come against the backdrop of Kenya’s recent medal haul at the World Athletics Championships, which the CS insisted was a testament to integrity.

Mvurya affirmed that the performance was a “clean win,” with the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) having given Kenyan athletes a clean bill of health.

“This demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting the integrity of our sport,” CS Mvurya stated, expressing optimism for a positive response from WADA in the coming months.

The CS made the announcement while inspecting the ongoing works at Nyayo National Stadium, a clear signal that infrastructure is also a national priority.

The stadium’s new tartan track is currently 90 percent complete and expected to be ready within the week.

Once finished, the government will begin installing a canopy to modernise the facility and ensure it meets international hosting standards.

This renewed drive marks a pivotal moment, underscoring Kenya’s resolve to not only field clean athletes but also secure its reputation for fair competition.
