Kenya’s Wanyonyi storms to second place in rainy Lausanne Diamond League

Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi finished second in the men’s 800m at the Lausanne Diamond League on Wednesday night, continuing his preparations for the upcoming World Championships.

The Kenyan clocked a time of 1:43.29, finishing behind American Josh Hoey, who won the race in 1:42.82. Spain’s Mohammed Attaoui completed the podium, finishing third with a time of 1:43.38.

This marks the first time since May that the 20-year-old Wanyonyi has not claimed first place, a run that included victories in the Oslo, Stockholm, and Monaco Diamond League legs.

His only other non-podium finish this year was a third-place at the Rabat Diamond League, where he recorded a time of 1:43.37. Wanyonyi also secured a second-place finish at the Grand Slam Track Series in Kingston with a time of 1:46.44.

Wanyonyi will now turn his focus to the World Championships in Tokyo next month, where he will represent Kenya in the 800m alongside teammates Nelson Kebenei and Kelvin Kimtai.

He will be aiming to improve on his silver medal from the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, where he finished with a time of 1:44.53.
