A section of Kericho Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who were in support of the impeachment motion against Governor Eric Kipkoech Mutai have come out strongly to defend their stand, saying their action was based on accountability and the interest of the people.
Speaking during a press briefing in Kericho on Tuesday September 2, 2025, the MCAs stated that after the governor’s survival at the Senate, he claimed that his political enemies were trying to fight him.
However, the MCAs, represented by Majority Leader in the County Assembly Philip Rono, said the County Assembly was exercising its mandate of oversight, particularly over the loss of Ksh 85 million in fictitious payments, which they allege the governor failed to address and instead celebrated his Senate victory without speaking about the corruption claims.
They added that the impeachment motion was not politically motivated but rather aimed at protecting public resources and restoring accountability in the county government.
At the same time, the MCAs warned politicians from other counties against interfering in Kericho politics without putting the interests of residents first, saying such actions only fuel division and derail development.
The MCAs further expressed frustration that although the ICT report detailing how MCAs voted in Kericho was accepted as accurate, the Senate still voted “No” for the impeachment motion, a move they say undermined the fight against corruption and eroded public trust in oversight institutions.
