Kianyaga Rising FC have emerged as champions of Governor Anne Waiguru’s Sh1.5 million county football tournament after edging out Kiamaina FC 1–0 in a tense final played at Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea on Jamhuri Day.
The Baragwi Ward side capped off a gruelling 10-month competition by holding their nerve in front of an estimated 5,000 fans, with the decisive moment arriving shortly after the break. Ericson Magu struck in the 50th minute, calmly finishing to hand Kianyaga Rising a narrow but vital lead that they defended to the final whistle.
Governor Waiguru presented the winners with the grand prize for Season Two of the tournament, while finalists Kiamaina FC from Mutira Ward settled for the runners-up award of Sh1 million after a spirited display that kept the contest finely balanced throughout.
Kianyaga Rising captain Dennis Kariuki described the triumph as the product of discipline, sacrifice and teamwork over many months. He thanked the county government for providing a platform for young players to showcase their talent and compete at a high level.
On his part, Kiamaina FC skipper Dennis Munene praised both teams for an entertaining final, saying his side would regroup and return stronger in the next edition. He also noted that the tournament has played a positive role in steering young people away from drugs and other social vices.
Earlier, Kaitheri FC claimed third place after prevailing in a dramatic penalty shootout against Kiburu FC following a 2–2 draw, earning Sh750,000, while Kiburu walked away with Sh500,000.
In the women’s final, Lakers Queens FC from Murinduko Ward dominated Kiaga Queens FC 4–1 to claim the Sh500,000 top prize, with Damaris Wangige and captain Yvonne Gichobi leading the scoring.
Governor Waiguru said the tournament, which involved 180 teams and over 4,500 youths from all wards, continues to nurture grassroots talent while promoting positive lifestyles across Kirinyaga County.
