Kikuyu elders from Kiama Kia Ma group were swiftly summoned on Monday May 26, 2025, to provide guidance after a sacred Mugumo (fig) tree branch fell, damaging several curio shops in Nyahururu town, Laikipia County.
Muthamaki Dominic Ng’era stated that the elders rushed to the scene because the Mugumo tree holds sacred significance in Kikuyu culture.
The fallen tree was one of many old Mugumo trees that dot the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the incident occurred at night when the curio shop owners were away.
Kiama Kia-Ma National Vice Chairman Michael Mugo confirmed that the tree branch had fallen due to old age.
After a thorough inspection, the elders agreed with this assessment, noting that there was no need for worry since the tree was too old. Their conclusion was supported by Muthamaki Ng’era and several other elders present at the scene.
Meanwhile, NYAHUWASCO Managing Director Bernard Mwaura reported that the falling tree had disrupted the main water supply, affecting the entire Nyahururu Sub-County, as well as Ol Jabet and Rumuruti towns.
However, he assured residents that repair work on the main water line was underway and asked for patience from water consumers during the reconnection process.
At the same time, area MCA Irene Wacuka noted that although the falling of a Mugumo tree often signifies a deeper, unseen message, it is important for elders to come together in prayer for peace in the region.
