Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has announced that the broad-based government will back ODM candidates in the upcoming by-elections, marking a rare show of unity between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking during a joint rally in Sikri, Kasipul Constituency, organized under the Women’s Empowerment Program, Prof. Kindiki and senior government officials joined ODM leaders to endorse Boyd Were, the ODM candidate and son of the late Ong’ondo Were, who was killed earlier this year.
Prof. Kindiki said the decision was made in line with an earlier understanding between UDA and the late Raila Odinga, describing it as a continuation of efforts to promote national cohesion.
He urged political players to refrain from early campaigning ahead of the 2027 General Election, emphasizing the government’s focus on service delivery and unity.
“This is a commitment to national reconciliation and honoring the legacy of the late Raila Odinga,” Kindiki stated.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah reiterated the Deputy President’s message, saying the gesture was a demonstration of respect and goodwill toward Raila Odinga and his contributions to Kenya’s democracy.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who also serves as ODM National Chairperson, lauded the move as a historic symbol of political maturity and cooperation. She affirmed that ODM would remain strong and united despite Odinga’s passing.
“This spirit of partnership reflects the Kenya we all want one built on respect, unity, and shared progress,” Governor Wanga said.
The Kasipul by-election is expected to test the emerging collaboration between the two major political forces as the country navigates a new era of bipartisan politics.
