Kipsoen, a small village with an extraordinary legacy of leadership in Kenya

Kipsoen is a vibrant village located in Keiyo North Constituency, within Kamariny Ward of Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Its name comes from the word “soet”, meaning Buffalo, reflecting both the wildlife that once roamed the area and the resilience of the community.

The village is known for its fertile highland soils, making agriculture the main economic activity. Residents grow maize, beans, millet, sorghum, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables, while sawmills provide vital employment for many families.

Kipsoen is surrounded by striking natural landmarks such as the Kerio Escarpment, Kessup Forest, Yokot Dam, and the expansive Cherangani water towers, adding to its unique beauty.

Kipsoen has produced several outstanding personalities. Among them is Jinaro Kibet, a highly respected Kenyan senior lawyer, corporate advisor, and prominent leader in both legal, sports and business circles.

Others include Engineer Hillary Kibet Sholim and renowned pilot Hillary Kipkurui Kibet, whose dramatic jet manoeuvres in the late 1990s inspired many Yokot Primary pupils to aspire to aviation careers.

The village is also home to influential political opinion leaders such as Kiplimo Saisi, David Wanyu, Francis Kurui, Moses Maina, Haron Chumo among others who continue shaping political conversations at both county and national levels.

Education remains central to Kipsoen’s identity. Kipsoen Boys High School is especially notable for producing Brimin Kipruto, widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most successful steeplechase runners and a dominant figure in the event during the 2000s and early 2010s.

The growing Kipsoen National Polytecnic further empowers the youth with practical skills.

Rooted in history and driven by ambition, Kipsoen continues to rise as a centre of pride, progress, and opportunity.
