Kisii, Nandi counties at risk of malaria outbreak in April, May – Alert shows

Kisii and Nandi have been listed as high risk counties of malaria outbreak in April and May, this is according to an alert jointly developed by the Kenya Meteorological Department, the Ministry of Health, and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).

The alert, titled ‘Malaria Epidemic Early Warning Prediction System for Western Kenya Highlands’, shows that Kisii county’s level of risk is 100% while Nandi county’s level of risk is 60%.

Experts have attributed the high risk to the increased rainfall experienced in March in the Western Kenya Highlands as well as a decrease of temperature in the same month, which they say will still support mosquito survival in the region.

The risk of malaria outbreak for Kakamega county is however expected to be low for April and May, at 27.3%.

The weather and health experts have however advised members of the public to consult with their local health authorities for preventive measures against the disease. “This bulletin is intended for informational purposes only. It should not be used as the sole basis for public health decisions.”

This even as Ministry of Health in March 2026 highlighted that the country has reduced malaria prevalence from 104 to 72 cases per 1,000 population.
