Government in urgent appeal for blood as Kisumu-Kakamega crash death toll hits 26

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga has called for urgent blood donations to support survivors of the Kisumu–Kakamega road accident that claimed 25 lives.

The crash involved a school bus carrying mourners from Nyakach. The ill-fated bus, belonging to Naki A.I.C School in Nyakach, veered off the road and overturned while navigating the roundabout.

32 survivors including an 8-month-old baby are now receiving treatment in the Orthopaedic Trauma Ward at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).

The blood drive will be held on Saturday, August 9, at Leresian Park, JOOTRH, from 9:00 AM, led by the Blood Transfusion Unit.

Dr. Oluga has praised the swift emergency response, noting that all survivors were admitted within three hours of the crash, and confirmed that counseling is being provided to affected families.

The Ministry of Health has extended condolences and urged motorists to exercise extreme caution to prevent further tragedies on Kenyan roads.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale wrote on his X account ”The grisly accident along the Kisumu–Kakamega Road has left a deep wound in our hearts. Lives have been abruptly cut short and families torn apart in a moment of tragedy. To those who are mourning, we convey our heartfelt condolences and assure you of our solidarity during this painful time.”

Duale said the Ministry of Health remains unwavering in its commitment to do everything humanly possible to preserve the lives of those injured, deploying every resource, every skill and every heartbeat of compassion to ensure they have the best chance of recovery. ”United, we can offer comfort, solidarity and hope in the face of this profound sorrow,” Duale said.
