Kisumu County is in mourning after the tragic death of Mr. George Otobe Olwanda, the Head of Security for the Kisumu County Boda Boda Association.
Known for his courage, integrity and dedication, Otobe was a pillar of discipline in the county’s boda boda sector.
“Mr. Otobe’s commitment to peace and security will remain a lasting legacy,” said the chairman of the association, Jacob Ogambo. “His guidance kept riders organized and professional, creating a safer environment for all residents.”
Otobe was attacked near a political rally in Mbale last Saturday. Witnesses say he identified himself as a security official, but the assailants continued their assault. The incident occurred in a tense political atmosphere, where clashes and intimidation are not uncommon.
“Violence and lawlessness have no place in our society,” Ogambo said. “Such acts not only rob families of loved ones but threaten the peace and stability of the county.”
Analysts note that boda boda leaders like Otobe are often targets during election periods. Attacks on respected community figures can instill fear and disrupt order.
Mitigating goonism during elections
Experts emphasize proactive measures to prevent election-related violence:
●Coordination Between Security Agencies: Early identification of gangs or rogue actors near rallies can prevent attacks.
●Community Vigilance: Residents and riders should report suspicious activity promptly.
●Public Awareness: Civic education campaigns can reduce tolerance for election-related violence.
●Swift Justice: Prompt investigations and prosecutions deter further crimes.
A call for calm and justice
The Boda Boda Association urges calm while authorities carry out investigations. The organization also reaffirmed its support for the National Government’s efforts to maintain law and order.
“We must not allow criminal elements to divide or destabilize our community during this difficult time,” Ogambo said.
Authorities have arrested several suspects linked to the rally violence. Some were released on bond, pending further investigation. Observers stress that thorough prosecution is vital to prevent escalation.
Otobe’s death is a reminder of the risks community leaders face. He was an anchor of discipline and safety for riders and the public alike.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. George Otobe Olwanda,” the Association said. “May they find strength and comfort as they mourn this painful loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Kisumu County must now honor Otobe’s legacy by ensuring law enforcement, community solidarity and zero tolerance for election-period violence.
