Kisumu leaders, Church react to June 25 protests

Kisumu Governor Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, thanked residents for maintaining peace throughout the day on June 25, 2025, as they commemorated the first anniversary of the Gen Z protests.

In a statement on Wednesday, Nyong’o stated that most streets in Kisumu city and other towns remained calm throughout the day.

“I wish to thank the residents of Kisumu County for maintaining peace today during the activities commemorating the first anniversary of the Gen Z protests,” Nyong’o said.

“Streets in Kisumu city and other towns in our sub counties remained relatively calm throughout the day,” he added.

He also assured residents that as a county, they will not only protect but also promote human rights and express constructive dissent to any form of political oppression and abuse of human rights.

On the same, the church also pronounced itself and strongly commended Kisumu County residents for heeding to calls for peace and for remaining calm despite what was being witnessed in other parts of the country.

The church advised Gen Z to borrow from Kisumu County and shun violence for dialogue.

“It has been a tradition for violent engagement in Kisumu between the residents and the police during public protests and while we stand in solidarity with families of victims who were affected in June last year, we want to commend Kisumu County residents for remaining calm and choosing peace as their way of commemorating the first anniversary of Gen Z protests,” Said Bishop Charles Okombo, the presiding Bishop of Full Gospel churches of Kenya at Shauri Moyo estate and the National treasurer.

This comes after most streets in Kisumu City remained calm, businesses went on as usual as no eventualities were reported in any of the sub counties.

Earlier, there was an attempt by a handful of Gen Z to take to streets but as they had just converged to issue a press statement on their petition, they were forced to cut shot their presser, run for safety after unknown people attacked them.

Some of them vanished without a trace as some took refuge at the deputy County commissioner’s office and while no injuries were reported, the intention to march in the streets soon faded off.
