Kitengela Jua Kali Artisans to benefit from over  KSh100 million in ongoing affordable housing, mordern market projects

Kitengela Kajiado, 25th September 2025: Jua Kali artisans under the Kitengela Jua Kali Association are set to benefit from a KSh92 million engagement with the Government for provision of steel doors, windows, balustrades, carpentry and joinery fittings, painting, tiling, landscaping and other components through the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).

This follows the recent groundbreaking for construction of the Boma Yangu Kitengela Veterinary Estate, a mixed-use project that will host affordable, social, and market-rate housing, thirty-two retail shop units, a powerhouse, pump room, guard house, garbage receptacles, a kindergarten and clubhouse. This ecosystem not only promotes dignified living spaces for its occupants but also promotes the local economy, integrating the Jua Kali artisans as well as the future occupants of these business spaces.

Speaking during a briefing session with key stakeholders, Joseph Kagicha, the area Regional Lead of the Boma Yangu Kitengela Housing Project, highlighted job creation as one of the key areas the project has to the local area.

“We have over 400 workers, mainly local youth and women engaged on-site, supported by eighteen professionals including engineers and technical staff.  To ensure that we meet the set timelines, the site is operating on a double-shift system, effectively doubling the number of workers engaged and amplifying the project’s direct impact on household incomes in the area,” he added.

Within the vicinity of this housing project is the Kitengela Modern Market, an initiative that is being implemented in tandem with the Affordable Housing Project. The market, located in Sholinke Ward in Kitengela, will provide a permanent area for 2500 traders to conduct their business in improved spaces well equipped with much-needed amenities.

“The Kitengela Modern Market represents a key investment in strengthening local commerce and improving livelihoods. It has employed over 100 local youth and women on-site, supported by ten professionals from the built environment, including engineers and technical staff. The project has also integrated the Sholinke Ward Jua Kali Association into its supply chain through ring-fenced contracts worth over KSh14 million for terrazzo, steel doors, windows, balustrades, and other components, ensuring that economic benefits remain within the local community,” he explained.

The development comprises a Main Market Block with ground and first floors designed with adequate space and facilities to accommodate the 2,500 traders. The layout is carefully planned to optimise circulation, ensure accessibility, and enhance the trading environment for both vendors and customers.

The market also has a service building for administrative functions, including offices for market management and revenue collection and meeting rooms for traders’ associations and county officials.  There is an Ablution Block, Waste Cubicle, and Chain Link Fencing to promote hygiene and security.  Extra utilities include a generator and solar panels for sustainable, redundant power supply, a borehole for reliable water supply and Smart Stalls to accommodate the traders. The project also incorporates a Boda Boda Shed to support transport services, as well as External Paved Areas to cater for trader spillover and customer circulation.
