Kitui County records significant progress in key government programmes

Kitui County continues to register commendable progress in implementing flagship government programmes that are transforming lives and driving sustainable development across the region.

The latest data reflects remarkable achievements in social protection, environmental conservation, education, health, and agriculture – all aligned with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Kitui has made major strides in improving social safety nets. A total of 76,559 beneficiaries in the county are currently supported through the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme.

This initiative has played a critical role in uplifting the livelihoods of older persons, persons with disabilities, and orphans, ensuring that no one is left behind in the government’s drive for equitable development.

Beyond providing relief, the cash transfers have boosted local economies by increasing household purchasing power and promoting financial inclusion at the grassroots.

Building on these social gains, the county has also intensified its efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change. Under the 15-billion National Tree Growing Programme, Kitui has planted 2,757,435 trees.

This is a remarkable demonstration of local commitment to the government’s climate agenda. Driven by community groups, schools, and public institutions, this effort not only enhances carbon sequestration but also supports sustainable livelihoods through fruit trees and agroforestry.

Equally encouraging is the progress in education, which is a cornerstone of Kenya’s social transformation. Kitui County has maintained an impressive 97.7 percent transition rate from primary to secondary school.

This achievement underscores the success of ongoing education reforms and the dedication of teachers, parents, and administrators who ensure that every child continues their learning journey.

By sustaining these efforts, the county moves Kenya closer to achieving the national goal of 100 percent transition and inclusive education for all.

Progress has also been evident in the health sector. The rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA) continues to gain traction, with 192,933 residents of Kitui County now registered.

This milestone reflects the government’s determination to realize universal health coverage, ensuring that quality and affordable healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of income or location.

Meanwhile, agriculture, which is the backbone of Kitui’s economy, is undergoing a quiet revolution. Through data-driven planning and targeted farmer support, the county has profiled 235,392 farmers to enable better service delivery and more precise interventions.

In addition, 41,392 bags of fertilizer have been distributed to enhance productivity and promote climate-smart agriculture. These initiatives are helping farmers improve yields, strengthen food security, and raise household incomes.

Taken together, these achievements reflect a powerful story of transformation unfolding in Kitui County. From social protection and education to health, agriculture, and environmental stewardship, coordinated government interventions are creating opportunities, empowering communities, and laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.

Ultimately, the progress demonstrates how the government’s people-centered approach is translating policy into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens, advancing the vision of shared growth, equity, and resilience.
