Koguta community in Muhoroni, Kisumu fights to protect government-allocated land from alleged encroachment

In the quiet plains of Muhoroni constituency, Kisumu County, a storm brews not of thunder and rain, but of fear, frustration, and a community’s desperate plea for justice. The people of Koguta, a resilient and tightly knit community, are grappling with a land dispute that threatens to uproot their lives and erase a promise made by the government.

On March 19, 2019, the National Land Commission ,NLC, officially allocated parcels of land numbered 3977 and 3978 to the Koguta community. It was a moment of triumph, a long-awaited recognition of their right to settle and thrive. But today, that triumph hangs in the balance.

Led by Brother Onditi Akula, the elders of Koguta have come forward to raise alarm over what they describe as an aggressive attempt by Kipchimchim Sugar Milling Company to seize the land. According to the community, the company has resorted to intimidation, allegedly deploying armed individuals to instill fear and silence resistance. “They came not with dialogue, but with threats,” one elder lamented, his voice heavy with sorrow.

The community now lives in a state of constant anxiety, fearing eviction from land they believe is rightfully theirs. Homes, memories, and futures are at stake. The land is more than a physical space, it is a symbol of identity, belonging, and generational hope.

Despite the tension, the people of Koguta remain united. Their voices, though shaken, are unwavering. They are calling on the national government to intervene, to honor the promise made in 2019, and to protect them from what they see as corporate encroachment. Their appeal is not just for land, it is for dignity, peace, and the right to exist without fear.

As the dispute unfolds, one thing is clear: the heart of Koguta beats with resilience. In the face of intimidation, they choose unity. In the shadow of uncertainty, they cling to hope. And in the silence of bureaucracy, they raise their voices, praying that justice will answer.
