A deadly land clash in Ndithini Division, Machakos, has left one man dead and four others with severe injuries. The confrontation erupted over ownership of a 120-acre piece of land that has been at the center of a legal battle since the 1970s.
According to local authorities, chaos broke out when a man claiming to be the land’s rightful owner arrived with plans to develop it, only to find squatters already occupying the area. Acting chief John Ndunda, confirmed the incident, stating that a fierce scuffle followed after both sides clashed.
The alleged owner, Kenneth Kinara, revealed that his farm manager, one of the injured, later succumbed to his injuries. Another victim remains in critical condition. Kinara insists he owns the land and holds valid documents, accusing the squatters of making false claims.
On the other hand, squatters, led by Benedict Musyoka, say they have lived on the land for decades, dating back to when white settlers allowed their families to settle there. They claim the land was later sold to a society in which they were members.
John Wambua, a resident since 1961, said his house was demolished during the chaos, leaving him and his children homeless amid the ongoing rains. He added that they have a 2010 court order backing their stay.
Several houses belonging to the squatters were destroyed by an alleged gang of hired goons, leaving many without shelter.
Chief Ndunda assured residents that the government is seeking peaceful resolution through dialogue.
The land, known as ‘G Farm,’ remains under dispute as the courts continue to deliberate on the rightful ownership.
