Leaders urged to avoid politics during mourning of 26 accident victims in Nyakach

In the wake of a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of 26 people in Kotombo village, leaders in the Nyakach region are being called upon to suspend political activities and instead focus on supporting grieving families and survivors.

The tragic incident occurred at the Coptic Mamboleo roundabout along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway, leaving the community in deep mourning and shock.

The accident, described as one of the deadliest in recent history, has not only robbed families of their loved ones but also left several individuals critically injured.

As the region grapples with the emotional and psychological aftermath, calls for unity and compassion have intensified.

Speaking at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where many of the injured are receiving treatment, Johanes Atela, Patron of the Grass Root Impact organization, emphasized the need for leaders to set aside political agendas during this period of grief.

“This is not the time for politics. It is a time for healing, for solidarity, and for action,” Atela said.

He expressed concern over the psychological trauma experienced by the affected families, noting that many are struggling to cope with the sudden loss and the uncertainty surrounding the recovery of their loved ones.

“The emotional toll is immense. These families need counseling, financial support, and assurance that they are not alone,” he added.

Atela also revealed that his organization has already initiated measures to assist the victims and their families.

These include mobilizing resources for medical care, offering psychosocial support, and coordinating with local stakeholders to ensure that survivors receive the help they need.

He urged the broader community to rally behind the victims, stressing that collective action is essential in times of tragedy.

“Let us come together, not as politicians or factions, but as human beings who care deeply for one another,” he said.

As the cloud of somber mood hovers Nyakach, leaders and council of elders emphasize on shared responsibility.
