Lionel Messi hits 900 goals, joins exclusive club with Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi has yet again etched his name into football history, scoring his 900th career goal in the opening minutes of Inter Miami’s CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 clash against Nashville on Wednesday night.

The goal came in trademark Messi fashion. In the seventh minute, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner received a pass in the middle of the box, controlled it effortlessly, spun past defenders, and slotted a low shot into the far corner all with his lethal left foot, the same foot that has produced the majority of his goals for club and country.

This milestone puts Messi in exclusive company alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the only other men’s player to have reached the 900-goal mark.

Interestingly, Messi achieved the feat faster, needing about 100 fewer matches than Ronaldo, who reached 900 goals at the age of 39 in September 2024. Messi, by contrast, turns 39 in June 2026.

Messi’s latest achievement adds to an already glittering career that includes eight Pichichi trophies as La Liga’s top scorer, three Best FIFA Men’s Player awards, three UEFA Men’s Player of the Year titles, two FIFA World Cup Golden Balls, and a staggering 15 selections as Argentina’s best player in a given year.

The Argentine superstar has also won 47 trophies across club and country, including the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and last season’s MLS title with Inter Miami, making him the most decorated player in men’s football history.

Messi remains one of the most popular and followed athletes in the world, with his No. 10 Inter Miami jersey topping MLS merchandise charts since his arrival. Every action he takes continues to dominate headlines across the globe.

More than half of Messi’s goals came with Barcelona, where he spent nearly two decades before joining Inter Miami in 2023.

Originally under contract through the end of last season, he now has a renewed deal extending until 2028, keeping fans excited for years to come.

“The reality,” Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said late last season, “is that Leo clears all doubts.”

Messi is also expected to represent Argentina this summer in the World Cup across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, where he could further cement his status as football’s greatest player.
