Police have launched investigations after a firearm was reported missing on Sunday October 19, 2025 during the State Funeral ceremony of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. when Police Constable (PC) Benson Kodia, a General Service Unit (GSU) officer attached to the VIP Protection Unit of the Kakamega Governor, discovered that his Jericho pistol had been snatched from his holster.
The officer was in the process of escorting the Governor away from the crowded venue when the incident happened.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the event had drawn thousands of mourners from across the country, including top political leaders, security personnel, and members of the public who had gathered to pay their last respects to the veteran opposition leader.
In the midst of the heavy crowd, a group of unidentified youths reportedly took advantage of the commotion to grab the firearm and vanish into the crowd.
Security officers on site immediately initiated a search around the venue but were unable to recover the weapon due to the chaotic environment.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Bondo has since taken over the case and launched an intensive operation to trace the missing firearm and apprehend the suspects.
Police have appealed to members of the public to remain calm and to cooperate with law enforcement officers by providing any information that may assist in the recovery of the stolen firearm.
Authorities have also assured the public that the situation is under control and that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure public safety.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security management during high profile public events, especially those involving large crowds and key political figures.
